About the MWCC Research Skills MOOC

COURSE OUTCOMES: Students will identify, access, evaluate, and use information effectively, ethically and legally in order to create meaningful knowledge and understanding upon completion of this course. This brief course is designed to introduce students to the skills necessary to write a college research paper. The course consists of 21 brief modules organized into six skill sets and should take a few hours to complete. The modules are color coded to indicate BEGINNING RESEARCH SKILLSINTERMEDIATE RESEARCH SKILLS and ADVANCED RESEARCH SKILLS.

Although the modules form a complete sequence, some research skills receive particular focus in certain classes. Use the menu on the left of the MOOC to navigate to the modules designed and recommended to address the College's institutional student learning outcomes for RESEARCH for the following courses:  FYE 101,   ENG 101,   CIS 127

COURSE FORMAT: Each module contains one or more brief videos and/or a document. After viewing and studying the content, there is a quiz for most segments. You will have TWO attempts at each quiz. TO EARN AN ACHIEVEMENT, YOU MUST SCORE 80% OR BETTER OVERALL. A few modules have assignments that will be handed in to and graded by your professor.

TIPS FOR SUCCESS:

  • JUST OPENING A QUIZ COUNTS AS AN ATTEMPT, SO BE PREPARED TO COMPLETE THE QUIZ WHEN YOU OPEN IT.
  • CLOSED CAPTIONS are available on most videos. Just begin playback of the video and the CC link will appear on the menu bar.
  • Feel free to watch the videos more than once and take notes as you watch.
  • Click the icon in the bottom right corner of each video to make it FULL SCREEN. Press the ESC button on your keyboard to return to normal view.
